On Thursday 6th July 2017, the National Committee (NC) in Mozambique was re-launched. This took place during a high level gala dinner that featured dignitaries including Mrs. Graca Machel, wife of former Mozambican President Samora Machel and eventually wife to former South African President Nelson Mandela. Other dignitaries included Mrs. Honwana, widow of Fernando Honwana, Foreign policy advisor to Samora Machel and Luis Honwana, brother to Fernando.
Speaking during the event, Mrs. Graca Machel said the Mozambican National Committee must never fail. “This is a great initiative and since I am part of it, I will make sure that it does not fail,” she said.
The dinner also saw the announcement of an annual scholarship in honour of Fernando Honwana to be offered by the Mozambique National Committee. Fernando Honwana was a Waterford student from 1964 – 1969, becoming head boy in his final year at the school. His children were also here in the 1990s. Fernando played a significant part in the liberation struggle of Mozambique, and contributed immensely to social justice, peace and stability in the region.
