8 Apr, 2019

The 2019 UWC Day held on Saturday 6th April was a thrilling event.

The day started with an opening assembly in which there were speeches and performances including music and gumboot dance. There was also the parade of nations and students from various nations paraded with their national flags. After the assembly, performances continued in the school’s academic square and those in attendance got an opportunity to visit the different stalls to buy food and get exposed to diverse cultures.

Waterford principal Stephen Lowry said, “UWC Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate something that is core to our DNA – diversity – and we will do this through a series of activities, including speeches, dance, poems and music, as well as through food and display of various cultures.” The guest speaker for the event was renowned South African poet, novelist and activist, Mongane Wally Serote. Professor Mongane Serote is currently an honorary professor in the Philosophy department at the University at Johannesburg.
