Trevor Dougherty (United States, WK 09-10)

What years did you attend Waterford Kamhlaba? (What forms/year group?)

2009-2010 (IB1-IB2)

Please tell us what you have done or are doing at the moment? (e.g. what you studied and what field you are currently working in)

After I left WK, I went to work in video production in San Francisco and Bangkok and studied experimental theatre at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Highlights since WK include becoming a professional DJ, speaking at the LeWeb Conference in Paris and the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, and becoming a drone videographer in Detroit. None of that compares to going to school in Swaziland, though. I dream about Swaziland, and Waterford, more than I dream about anything else. I have currently stopped all other pursuits to write full time: I am working on a nonfiction book about the intersection between mental health and pop culture.

Could you tell us what inspired you to pursue your career path.

My parents, my favourite films, the internet video revolution, dance music and hip hop.

Did Waterford in any way play a role in your career path choice?

I think, more importantly, Waterford showed me that there was a world outside my career path choice.

What advice would you have for aspiring students who would want to be involved in
similar areas of expertise?

Turn off your phone, and take a deep breath.

Do you have any fond memories of Waterford? Could you possibly share one with us and could we also ask you to send us one or two pictures of your time at WK?

Almost all my fond memories at Waterford take place in Block A at Elangeni, with my Block A brothers. That was our HQ, and we conquered the IB - as well as countless arguments about global politics and international ethics. Cold showers for birthdays, and football in the corridor.

Who was in your WK #squad (friend group)?

Riasat, Panashe, Knowledge, Mebrahtu, Shaun, Vishaal, Simphiwe, John, Nathi

Favourite teacher/Most hilarious teacher?

Mwenda / Mama D!
