Nomfundo Howard (Swaziland, WK 10-11)

What years did you attend Waterford Kamhlaba? (What forms/year group?)
I was there from 2010 to 2011 for IB

Please tell us what you have done or are doing at the moment? (e.g.. what you studied and what field you are currently working in)
I studied at Wits University from 2013 and graduated 2018 – Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery: MBBCh/Medicine – and currently waiting to start my internship at Mbabane Government Hospital

Could you tell us what inspired you to pursue your career path?
My inherent desire to help people, I would say. I never knew any doctors growing and I wasn’t exposed to something that could have brought up my interest in Medicine.

Did Waterford in any way play a role in your career path choice?
Waterford shaped me in many ways. I grew more confident and courageous which are key ingredients in decision-making and choices that one makes daily.

What advice would you have for aspiring students who would want to be involved in similar areas of expertise?
My advice for anyone interested in studying Medicine would be, just like with other career choices, pick a field because you are passionate about it. The love you have for that field is the one that will carry you when it gets tough and you will remind yourself why you started and where you are headed. That is important.

Do you have any fond memories of Waterford? Could you possibly share one with us and could we also ask you to send us one or two pictures of your time at WK?
I had the best moments with my volleyball team. It was refreshing every time – during practice and even better during tournaments.

Most embarrassing moment at Waterford?
Most embarrassing moment would be when I had to sweep the yard at Elangeni.

WK crush?
Crush…Hmmmm… Not sure

What’s your favorite ’90s jam?
Not sure about an exact jam but favorite artists from that time period are Whitney Houston, Shania Twain and Celine Dion

Who was in your WK #squad (friend group)?
Nkosingiphile Shongwe, Puleng Moshele, Prudence, Nolwazi, Nomzamo, Fides, Tsitsi

Favourite teacher/Most hilarious teacher?
Favorite teacher is Chemistry teacher Mr. Simelane.
