Nnenna (United States, WK 92-93)

What years did you attend Waterford Kamhlaba? (What forms/year group?)

Class of 1993

Please tell us what you have done or are doing at the moment? (e.g.. what you studied and what field you are currently working in)

I am an artist and an art Professor at North Park University in Chicago. I received University degrees in Painting and Sculpture.

Could you tell us what inspired you to pursue your career path.

I chose to be an art teacher to inspire and engage young and emerging artists.

Did Waterford in any way play a role in your career path choice?

If yes: then what has that role been.

I always had a passion for art. But my experience at Waterford helped me discover and hone my creative skills. The art classes were challenging, yet exhilarating. The freedom and support I received there gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams of becoming an artist.

What advice would you have for aspiring students who would want to be involved in
similar areas of expertise?

I would advise students with the talent or interest to believe in themselves and do their best to stand out stylistically. Push forward and never give up on your pursuit due to societal pressures or stigmas. Perseverance is the key to success.

Do you have any fond memories of Waterford?

This is a hard one, as I have too many fond memories. But at the top of my list is the Makosa dance that I choreographed and with some of my peers for the cultural show. It was always fun putting it together and performing on stage.

Could you possibly share one with us and could we also ask you to send us one or two pictures of your time at WK?

Unfortunately, I don’t have many photos at hand.

Most embarrassing moment at Waterford?

They were quite a few, but I think that the morning I accidentally fell into the pool during PE, and almost drown after claiming I could swim – this may still top the chart.

WK crush?

Mr Lancaster

What’s your favorite ’90s jam?

“Motownphilly" by Boyz II Men

Who was in your WK #squad (friend group)?

Favourite teacher/Most hilarious teacher?

Art Teacher: Mr Vand….(I can’t remember his name, which begins with a ‘V’, but he was the art teacher in 1992, 1993)
